Feeding Wild Birds The Right Way
3 Easy Steps to Proper Bird Feeding
-
Step 1: Start With Better Seeds
Use a clean, nutritious seed mix made with ingredients birds love—like sunflower, safflower, or peanuts. Fresh, filler-free blends keep birds coming back and help support their health year-round.
-
Step 2: Use the Right Feeders
Tube and hopper feeders work well for blends with sunflower seeds, while flat platform feeders are ideal for birds that prefer open space. Using a mix of feeders invites more bird types to your yard.
-
Step 3: Provide Fresh Water
A shallow dish of fresh water—changed often—gives birds a place to drink and clean their feathers. Even birds that don't visit feeders may stop by for a sip or splash.
My backyard birds love this seed. But I would love to know how to keep the squirrels away from the birdseed.
I was using mostly cracked corn and few birds. Now I have gold finch, purple finch, Baltimore oriole, mourning doves, cardinals and blue jays.
Great bag of seed for neighborhood birds! Finch, doves, bluejay, and cardinals all seem to enjoy eating the seed!
This 6 lb wild bird seed is excellent value for the money — birds consistently flock to it, especially cardinals and other songbirds. The quality and mix balance are spot‑on, with hearty black oil sunflower and safflower kernels that birds clearly prefer. Durability and breakability are good; the seeds aren’t overly dusty or crushed, so less mess under the feeder. The size of the mix keeps feeders full and there’s been no noticeable moisture or leakage issues in my storage. Overall functionality is exactly what backyard bird lovers want, and the birds’ enthusiastic response suggests a mix they genuinely enjoy.
These look good enough to eat. Too bad the warning label says it's only for wild birds, although I do wonder what makes them unsuitable for domesticated birds? Anyways they come vacuum sealed and smell nice and fresh when you open them. The ziplock closure makes it easy to keep them fresh between feeder refills.Outside the birds and squirrels love them. I really like that the lack of fillers makes the chances of volunteer plants and weeds much less likely (other than sunflowers of course). Overall, I'm happy with these seeds as are the little visitors to my yard.
